Eco-friendly Waste Management Practices
May 5, 2016
With human waste output at an all-time high, naturally businesses and consumers seek eco-friendly ways to manage waste. Landfill companies, businesses, and consumers all play a part in disposing of waste in a manner that helps preserve the environment. Numerous practices exist for people to help get rid of waste in responsible ways.
Skip bins are large containers with open tops for waste materials. They are designed to fit onto a lorry. The truck removes the container and then tips it into a landfill or other site.
Skips are adequate for waste management because their size and efficiency allow anyone to remove significant amounts of waste. Most of the waste taken by skip bin companies is recycled, as is often the case with construction waste materials. The companies often separate materials before sending them to landfills or recycle centers.
Many communities require consumers to separate recyclables by material type, usually plastic, paper and glass. Unfortunately, this practice is not the most environmentally conscious approach because it reduces efficiency. The company uses more trucks with this process, increasing gas, miles and vehicle emissions.
Single-stream recycling, by contrast, means recyclables of all material types are put together in one bin. By making recycling easier, more people engage in the practice. Companies do not have to use as many trucks to collect materials. Thus, single-stream recycling is the eco-friendly way to recycle.
Measuring carbon footprint at landfills
Some landfill companies are now conducting studies and establishing teams to measure their carbon footprint. These companies pay particular attention to greenhouse gas emissions. These teams are also charged with coming up with ways to decrease the landfill.company’s Carbon footprint. Knowing what the emissions are and what levels they are is the first step toward reducing those emissions.
Alternative cover systems
Another way some landfills attempt to be more eco-friendly is through the use of alternative cover systems. The traditional protection systems consist of prescriptive membrane caps while the new systems utilize all-soil caps. The membrane caps are more porous and release more emissions. This new green technology helps reduce odors as well as gas emissions.
Measuring methane levels
In addition to paying attention to greenhouse gasses, landfills should measure methane levels. All landfills produce methane. By knowing what the levels are, landfills can institute practices to curb the levels of methane.
In summary, consumers and businesses can engage in multiple practices to help dispose of waste in environmentally friendly ways. The use of skip bins by firms can increase recycling because skip companies often sort recyclables out of bulk collections of waste. Also, recycling companies can be more eco-friendly by utilizing single-stream recycling instead of the traditional method of having consumers and businesses sort recyclables by material type. Landfill businesses can contribute to the solution by measuring their carbon footprint. Also, they can use environmentally friendly cover systems that reduce odor and emissions.
All in all, everyone can play a role in the fight against waste management by using eco-friendly practices.
